VIC:Deal won't help hospitals grow:Baillieu

Premier TED BAILLIEU says Victorian patients won't notice any major differences in
public hospitals as the result of a four billion dollar injection from Canberra.

After protracted wrangling with the states, particularly Western Australia and Victoria,
Prime Minister JULIA GILLARD has unveiled a national health reform deal today.

Under the deal, Victoria will reap an extra 4.1 billion dollars from 2014 to 2020,
but Mr BAILLIEU says the cash will merely help hospitals cope with rising demand, rather
than expand.

The premier says he's positive about the outcomes but also realistic as well.

About 300 people were evacuated from the site at about 7.15am after reports of an ammonia

FED:Sydney to have "wrinkly, crinkly" landmark

SYDNEY, Dec 16 AAP - Renowned architect Frank Gehry has unveiled his extraordinary
"crinkly, wrinkly" design for the $150 million University of Technology Sydney (UTS) business
school, admitting it will probably cause a stir.

"I think that anything new seems to generate some questions," the 81-year-old Canadian-born
architect told AAP.

"I think, confidently, once these things are built they are absorbed in a nice way
by the community.

"A lot of junk is built in cities around the world and nobody really complains ...

I don't think it's going to destroy your town, honest."

Senator Chris Evans, the federal Tertiary Education Minister, said the building would
be controversial.

"As with all contributions to Sydney, there will be controversy and debate," he told reporters.

"That's a good thing. It's important that the university continues to stimulate debate
and engage in it."

The 11-storey building is due for completion for the 2014 academic year, subject to
planning approval.

It will be Mr Gehry's only Australian design.

The architect described the structure as being like a "tree house", generating a sense
of "creative play".

"It's crinkly like that because the hardest thing to do in modern architecture is to
make it humane and give it a character, give it a feeling," he said.

Later in his speech at the building's unveiling, he referred to the building as "wrinkly".

It will be named the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building, after the Australian-Chinese business
leader who has donated $25 million for the project.

That equals the biggest single donation by any individual to an Australian university, UTS says.

The building will be located on the corner of Omnibus Lane and Ultimo Road, in the
inner city suburb of Ultimo, on a relatively small area of land currently used as a car
park.

The building is part of a wider, 10-year, $1 billion development of the UTS site, which
the university says will involve other new buildings, upgrading work and improved pedestrian
connection.

UTS vice-chancellor Ross Milbourne described Mr Gehry as a "creative genius".

"This building stands as an example, right in the centre, of what we are trying to
create," he told reporters.

On Sydney's architecture as a whole, Mr Gehry said: "I think it's like every other
city in the world, there's some good buildings, a lot of mostly mediocrity".

He singled out Chicago as one of the cities that currently have the best modern architecture.

VIC:Ferrari thief jailed four months

MELBOURNE, Aug 9 AAP - A man who stole a $355,000 red Ferrari from Melbourne's Crown
Casino has been jailed for four months.

Adam Ramsay, 32, of Flemington spotted the Ferrari F430 Spider in the casino's valet
parking about 1.30am (AEDT) on May 14 and asked the attendants for the keys.

He was handed the keys to the car after providing his name and address details.

Ramsay drove the car to Broadmeadows in the city's north and was arrested by police
when he stopped to fill the car up with petrol.

Ramsay's lawyer George Douglas told the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Monday the
joyride was unplanned.

"It wasn't planned, it was dumb," he said.

"It was an impulse thing."

He said when Ramsay took the car he didn't know what to do or where to go.

The father-of-two decided he wanted to see his children, but had some time to kill,
as it was still early morning.

But the red Ferrari, which was later reported missing by its owner, poker millionaire
Van Marcus, stood out in the northern suburb.

"There aren't too many red Ferraris in Broadmeadows," said Mr Douglas, who has an office
in the suburb.

Ramsay will serve the four-month jail term concurrently with a 35-month sentence he
is serving for other matters.

Chief Magistrate Ian Gray said the crime was "bizarre" but not significant enough to
warrant a tougher sentence.

"I accept that this was a spontaneous act," he said.

"There are no aggravating circumstances of this crime which call for an additional
period (of imprisonment) to be served," he said.

Fed: Swan says stimulus critics have learnt nothing

Federal Treasurer WAYNE SWAN has taken a swipe at critics of the government's economic
stimulus measures .. saying they were imperative to sustaining growth in the March quarter.

Amid better-than-expected economic data .. the opposition has been calling on the government
to reconsider stimulus measures to avoid public spending crowding out private investment.

Mr SWAN has told the ABC .. it would be a mistake to withdraw stimulus prematurely
.. saying any winding back would hurt thousands of small businesses.

He says the opposition has learnt nothing in the last five months .. and would have
pushed Australia into recession if it had its way.

Mr SWAN says the stimulus will be kept for as long as needed.

Fed: Pine Gap laws to be strengthened

CANBERRA, Dec 3 AAP - The federal government is strengthening laws to protect the top
secret Pine Gap spy facility which has been the target of protesters.

Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon told parliament on Wednesday that the base, located
in central Australia, had made an important contribution to the security of Australia
and the United States.

It collected intelligence by technical means and has the ability to provide early warning
of ballistic missiles.

Mr Fitzgibbon said the new measure would strengthen the government's ability to prosecute
anyone who broke into the base by declaring it a special defence undertaking.

This would remove the opportunity for argument about the validity of a ministerial
declaration that was required under the old laws.

Mr Fitzgibbon said the change would "deter mischief-makers and those with more sinister intent".

Vic: State govt to investigate if wages stolen from Aborigines

The Victorian government will investigate claims aborigines were systematically robbed
of welfare entitlements and wages owed to them for government work.

The Age reports the government has appointed an officer to examine more than 100 years
of state and federal government documents .. to determine if Victorian aborigines are
owed wages .. pensions .. child endowment payments .. and inheritances.

The officer reportedly began work in October in response to a Senate inquiry that found
Queensland and NSW aborigines' wages and entitlements were paid into state government
trust funds.

Historian Dr ROS KIDD says the money was withheld mainly between the 1890 and 1960s
when aborigines were forced to work on government stations and settlements.

their clients.

Shortly after the inquiry resumed today following a two-week break .. barrister TERRY

WA: Ocean robots to help scientists predict climate change

A mission to help scientists predict climate change more accurately is leaving the
Western Australian port of Fremantle today for the remote Southern Ocean.

It will release 17 robots which will dive to a depth of two kilometres every 10 days,
recording temperature and salinity measurements as they ascend.

The information will be relayed to scientists in Australia via the French ARGOS satellite,
providing a continuous measure of ocean change and current speeds.

Dr STEVE RINTOUL, the head of the mission from the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems

He says variations may indicate a change in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, which
influences climate patterns across the globe.

bogeyman

bogeyman. Any real or imaginary figure used by adults as a threat to coerce children into good behaviour is a bogeyman—often the final function of a belief that adults no longer share. This form of discipline was common until recently, and the figures invoked could be male or female, monstrous or natural, and could range from the Devil to the local doctor or policeman. The threat usually was that the creature would carry the child away, and perhaps eat it, either to punish naughtiness in general or because the child has gone too close to a dangerous spot, stayed out after dark, gone into an orchard to steal fruit, etc. Dickens shows a nursemaid ordering a little girl to go to sleep: ‘My goodness gracious me, Miss Floy, you naughty, sinful child, if you don't shut your eyes this minute, I'll call in them hobgoblins that lives in the cock-loft to come and eat you up alive’ (Dombey and Son, chapter 5).

Geneva man bails on 'Bachelorette'

It turns out living with his parents wasn't the only thing working against Geneva resident Frank as a contender for the heart of "The Bachelorette."

During the July 19 episode, after a successful hometown date and weeks of jealously declaring his constant love for Ali Fedotowsky, Frank revealed he is still in love with his ex-girlfriend at home, Nicole, something which has been rumored for weeks on the Internet. Frank visited Nicole in Chicago before going to Tahiti and asked her if she wanted to get back together. After some initial anger, Nicole said yes. Frank then joined fantasy suite week in Tahiti to tell Fedotowsky about this. It led to a much more serious time than usual, with crying and sulking and competing shouts of "I gave up everything for this," instead of the usual frolicking on the beach, romantic dinner and night in the fantasy suite. Frank then went home. However, the other two contestants, Roberto and Chris, still enjoyed the frolicking and romance, and ended the week with roses. They will be moving on to Bora Bora, where the season finale will take place. On Monday, the men had a chance to get their say during "The Men Tell All" special. EDITORIAL: / OPINION: West Virginia's Tax Loss to Internet Will Grow.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Dec. 4--It seems that as welfare rolls drop on one hand, their likes rise on the other, suggesting that the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing.

Take the case of West Virginia's Welfare to Work program, which rates as something of the model in the national climate of changing welfare, the saying goes, as we know it.

Now welfare rolls have few so-called tax-eaters and more taxpayers on one hand, but then it occurs on the other a rising horde of tax-takers.

That is if one is to believe a report by the state Tax Department on the rise in the loss of taxes on Internet sales. The holiday shopping season is boasting e-commerce sales, from all accounts, but not tax revenue.

By 2003, West Virginia will lose about $56.2 million in sales taxes through e-commerce, Mark Muchow, research director of the state Tax Department, told a legislative study committee earlier this year. But the loss right now is something less than $10 million.

Yet the projected loss for all states by 2003 amounts to about $10.8 billion. In my book, that speaks loads for tax-takers. It's shades of what some call business socialism or business welfare.

Truth to tell, it's a tax take for the consumer as well as business. Some West Virginia vendors collect the tax on Internet sales, but others don't, and that matters.

It raises the old question about tax collection on mail-order sales. Presently, the state is losing about $20 million in tax revenue on these sales, researchers say.

Nonetheless, the writing is on the wall for all to see that tax loss to mail-order business will pale by comparison to loss from the Internet in the immediate years ahead. Such is the mixed blessing of the Internet in this age of commercial wonders.

Even so, if Internet sales don't pay taxes, then the difference must be made up from other sources to pay for public services. On top of that, taxless Internet sales throw a monkey wrench in the marketplace, patently unfair to other payers of the sales tax.

I'm told that the federal Internet Tax Freedom Act doesn't prohibit states from collecting sales tax, not by any stretch of the imagination. The law was made to protect and encourage the growth of e-commerce, but not to harbor tax-takers.

Nor does the law excuse West Virginia vendors or others from legal responsibility to collect and remit Internet sales taxes due on consumer and business purchases as well.

Researchers say it appears that Virginia stands to lose the least amount of tax money from Internet sales, and Texas and Tennessee, the most.

In West Virginia, total consumer sales tax collections have risen to $851.8 million from $621 million in fiscal 1992 through 1999, states records show. During the same period, personal income tax collections grew about 54 percent, to $919.8 million from 598.6 million.

I think few, if any, taxpayers want their taxes increased to make up for uncollected Internet sales taxes, neither on one hand nor on the other from the same pocket.

"When we did hold the ball and got down their end it was penalties we were getting so we just kept on taking the three points but it would have been nice to build pressure and score tries," McCaw said.

The All Blacks have gone through their three June Tests beating Ireland once and Wales twice, scoring 15 tries and 137 points while conceding just 47.

The unbeaten run doesn't tell the whole story though. They beat an Irish side down to 14 men, had Carter to thank for getting them out of danger in the first Test against Wales and failed to put away at least three certain tries in Hamilton yesterday. And Henry has his work cut out ahead of the July 10 opener against South Africa, lauding errors that are certain to be punished against their fellow southern hemisphere heavyweights.

"The game against Wales was a bit messy," the stressed coach said. "There was a lot of ball turned over and dislodged at the tackle." His opposite number Warren Gatland, meanwhile, who demanded his side step up to the plate after going waving the white flag in the second half of last week's first Test, was happy Wales put an end to their try-scoring drought, however, will bemoan Daniel Carter for the second week running, as the star No.10 again proved the difference by kicking five penalties.

Gatland praised his side for stepping up from the 52-9 hiding they suffered in the first Test last week, saying: "We made a big improvement. I thought we scrummaged very well for the first 60 minutes but didn't really get anything from the dominance of our scrum. "Defensively we probably gave away a couple of soft penalties."

The All Blacks were looking for a far more convincing showing with Zac Guildford, Rene Ranger and Richard Kahui all guilty of losing the ball at crucial attacking moments, lapses in concentration that could prove costly come the Tri Nations with, on this evidence, South Africa the favourites.

National Land Survey of Iceland to Deploy ArcGIS for INSPIRE.

Solution Will Open Access to Data for Improved Governance

Redlands, Calif., June 28, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Land Survey of Iceland (NLSI) is implementing Esri's ArcGIS for INSPIRE to meet compliance with the European Union's Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe (INSPIRE) Directive. This will ensure that the country's public data is visible and accessible to institutions, companies, and individuals for improved governance.

By recent law, NLSI is the key player for implementing INSPIRE in Iceland. To help meet this directive, Esri's distributor in Iceland, Samsyn ehf., is providing the software and services to the national organization. NLSI has been a client of Samsyn since 1994 and in 2009 signed an enterprise license agreement to implement Esri software throughout the organization. Spatial data has been maintained and made available using Esri's ArcGIS software for many years.

"We believe Esri provides us with the best tools and latest solutions in order to comply with the INSPIRE requirements," said Eydis Lindal Finnbogadottir, director of service and SDI at NLSI.

ArcGIS for INSPIRE allows NLSI to fulfill the INSPIRE requirements without having to change its processes for creating and maintaining data. ArcGIS for INSPIRE includes tools to transform data into INSPIRE-compliant databases, which can be published with INSPIRE-compliant web services.

"We are excited to assist in this implementation of INSPIRE in Iceland," said Stefan Gudlaugsson, GIS manager at Samsyn. "ArcGIS for INSPIRE will make it easier for our clients to create and maintain INSPIRE-compliant data, metadata, and network services, creating a more robust spatial data infrastructure for the country."

The INSPIRE Directive addresses 34 spatial data themes necessary for environmental applications. These themes are organized into three annexes. ArcGIS for INSPIRE includes data models that comply with INSPIRE Annex I, which is the next milestone required for compliance with the INSPIRE Directive. ArcGIS for INSPIRE will be updated as necessary to include support for Annex II and III data models once they have been finalized.

Gordon, bless him, is satisfied ... and so am I.

AS A semi-regular columnist, I share a common bond with my readers. I like to think that often they don't really care what I write _ as long as I write something.

The editor is bound to disagree with me but, although I am paid by the word, it's not really about the actual words, it's more the fact that I am there for them. I am a candle in the window so to speak. A lighthouse on life's reef.

And it's perhaps because of this approach that so many readers confide in me, so I am very much a talk-back columnist.

I see myself as a male Kerre Woodham, although I doubt very much whether Kerre sees herself as the female version of me. You never know though, and you would have to ask her.

Let's take a look at a particular situation relevant to this issue.

Recently I was approached by an anonymous reader called Gordon who needed help with his sex life.

He could have approached Kerre but, as this was more of a ``men's issue'', he came to me _ and I am glad he did.

I am happy to report that Gordon's love life has improved ten-fold during the past few weeks as he has finally found a solution to his sexual dysfunction.

You see, Gordon, like thousands of male New Zealanders, used to suffer from premature ejaculation.

Over the years, he has tried all sorts of remedies, including nasal sprays, intense physical training and even hypnosis _ but to no avail.

In his own words, he ``kept having an all-stock-must-go clearance sale'' well before he and, more importantly, his partner, was ready.

As a talkback-style columnist, I am often tuned into modern scientific techniques and spend a lot of time on the internet trying to help people with their problems.

I do not charge for this as I see it as part of my commitment to making my readers happy. And it was while I was doing just such research that I came across Mr Wang's acupuncture therapy.

I was intrigued and after further research found out that Mr Wang, who is based in Howick, has been responsible for curing everything from asthma to colour blindness through his acupuncture techniques.

He has also helped thousands of people to quit smoking, plus helped those with alcohol problems.

I used the Herald on Sunday landline, phoned him and asked him whether he could help someone like Gordon with his problem.

After much consideration, he told me that he believed he could.

I immediately put Gordon in touch with Mr Wang and, six weeks later, I am happy to report that Gordon's premature ejaculation is a thing of the past.

I was eager to hear from Gordon how it all came about and he told me that regular acupuncture therapy has helped him to enjoy a fairly normal love life.

I asked him if there were any negative aspects to the procedure and this was his response: ``It has to be said that I last a lot longer now when making love.

``The only negative part, I suppose, is having an old Chinese man sticking needles into my testicles while I am doing so.

``My wife also finds this a little disconcerting. We try to pretend he is not there but that is easier said than done.

``Mr Wang and his assistant have become an integral part of our love life and we are just going to have to accept that. Mr Wang has changed our lives.''

Well, there you go, another satisfied reader who got help by contacting me.

If you have an issue you need help with, get in touch and I will see what I can do.

Editor's note: Leigh, columnists can write on something other than sex.

Verticals onDemand Launches First Mobility-as-a-Service(TM) Application for Life Sciences Companies.

VMobile[TM] delivers anywhere access to data with zero maintenance costs

PLEASANTON, Calif. -- Verticals onDemand, the pharmaceutical industry's leading provider of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) CRM solutions, launches a new category of on-demand applications - Mobility-as-a-Service[TM] (MaaS). Verticals onDemand's new VMobile[TM] MaaS application provides users with offline access to their VBioPharma[TM] CRM system. For the first time, life sciences companies can deploy mobile applications that do not require additional maintenance costs or effort to support and enhance.

The new VMobile application runs on any Microsoft [R] Windows XP or Vista-based laptop or Tablet PC, empowering users with anytime, anywhere access to their VBioPharma CRM system. Like other multitenant SaaS applications, all VMobile users run the same version of the underlying software code, enabling back-office upgrades and consistently high quality. VMobile also automatically reads the VBioPharma metadata, allowing customers to configure the application only once for deployment both online and offline.

Similar to user synchronization sessions with traditional mobile applications, VMobile sends all new data to the server and downloads all relevant data updates for the user. But, unlike other mobile products, any new versions of the application, software updates, and metadata are also included in this same synchronization session without any IT staff involvement.

"For the very first time, customers do not have to choose between end user satisfaction and overall maintenance costs," explained Peter Gassner, president and chief executive officer of Verticals onDemand. "With MaaS applications, customers benefit from a fast and flexible mobile application that is self-updating and self-maintaining. It is the best of both worlds."

The new MaaS application extends the versatility of VBioPharma, Verticals onDemand's SaaS CRM application launched in 2007. VMobile delivers the real-time convenience of a local database with the right functionality to get the job done quickly. Plus, with pre-validated PDMA and CFR Part 11 compliant sample disbursements and signature capture, VMobile ensures that pharmaceutical companies get the most out of their Tablet PC deployments.

"SaaS is great for users who have constant access to the Internet. But pharma reps also need access to their data when they are on the road, on a plane, and in a doctor's office. That's what MaaS brings to the table," says Matt Wallach, vice president of sales & marketing at Verticals onDemand. "No technology vendor has ever offered a mobile application with the same unprecedented ease of use, flexibility, and low total cost of ownership that is the hallmark of SaaS."

VMobile is generally available today and product demonstrations can be viewed in the VoD Demo Center at www.verticalsondemand.com/demo.

Online marketing: beating your competitors to the punch.

We all know the importance of targeting the right customer, at the right time, to sell your services. However, are you aware that more than 70% of customers are relying less on traditional marketing methods, such as Yellow Pages, newspaper, radio or television advertisements and are focusing on the Internet as their primary source to find local services and businesses?

In the course of the year, we work directly with thousands of contractors nationwide. It is obvious that the majority of them are not properly utilizing technology as a profitable source of providing not only customers, but better, more targeted customer leads.

According to The Kelsey Group, a research and consulting firm, local commercial searches will grow from approximately 15% to 25% by 2010 (including online searches for residential contractors). Therefore, online marketing will become increasingly important for RSI's readers. Yet, many contractors are lagging far behind in their ability to take advantage of this new form of marketing. Online marketing can cut costs and produce targeted leads--ones that your competition will never know existed.

It's all about positioning

If fewer prospective customers are using traditional methods to find contractors, why would you want to spend your hard-earned dollars on those marketing vehicles? You shouldn't. Instead, you should focus your interest on those vehicles that are attracting the customer's attention--namely, the Internet.

Most businesses discover that their road to profitability is paved with sales resulting from marketing their business where the best customers are located. But that means studying the trends and listening to what is going on in your targeted markets.

Here are some simple facts that might shock you, but may also help you improve your marketing efforts:

* Less than 50% of small businesses have a Web site.

* More than $4 billion of Yellow Page advertising is moving online by 2008.

* More than 70% of adults in the U.S. use the Internet as their information source when shopping for local services.

* The Kelsey Group estimates that local online commercial searches will increase from 15% to 25% by 2010 (this includes online searches for local home service professionals).

All of this research points to a trend for which you, as a business owner, should be taking note. It means that things are changing, and if you do not want to become a relic of days gone by, you must change your thinking about online marketing.

Am I telling you to run out and invest money in setting up a Web site? Absolutely not. Here are some things all small to medium size contractors should consider before investing in a Web site.

* The cost to establish a Web site that actually produces targeted leads can cost thousands of dollars. There is a science to making a Web site produce sales, and it is entirely different than what the average person thinks will work. Just hiring a Web site designer to design your site is unlikely to result in a site that will attract sales.

* The cost of optimizing your site for search engines, so people can find it when they type in keywords, requires time, research and money. First, your site has to be loaded with keywords and Mega tags that the search engines (like Google and Yahoo!) are indexing. The problem is that search engines are constantly changing their algorithms, so your site may become outdated before it even gets started. However, even if the search engine finds your site, there is no guarantee where you will end up in the result listing (maybe even at the end!).

Being in the first few pages of search results is critical, and that is difficult to achieve.

* The cost of pay-per-click advertising (PPC) is another method for small businesses that want to market their services online. This method involves selecting keywords that would result in your online advertisement appearing within search results (these are the shaded blue ads above or on the right-hand-side of search results). You pay for the keyword and each time a person clicks on your ad.

There are a few problems with PPC. The first being that your competition can raise the ante by bidding a higher amount for the keyword you have selected, resulting in their online ad being placed above yours. The second reason is that you pay each time someone clicks through to your Web site, whether or not they become a customer lead.

So what is the best way to position yourself online and realize a return for your online marketing efforts? Find a method that doesn't cost a lot and provides targeted leads.

We looked into multiple online marketing services to recommend to our clients. Some of the things we looked at include:

How much does the service cost? Is it a pay-per-lead model or do you pay monthly fees? How do they generate traffic to their Web site? How many people visit the site and how many customers does it actually generate? How does the service present you to the customer? How old is the company--fly-by-night Internet company, or established and trusted?

There are several services out there that promise to deliver targeted online customer leads, but not all do. Based on our findings, we believe that ServiceMagic Inc. (www.servicemagic.com) is the most comprehensive, targeted and cost-effective online marketing solution for residential contractors.

ServiceMagic has created a way for you to get broad Internet exposure without having to pay huge up-front fees or become a search engine marketing guru--it does your online marketing for you so you can focus on doing your job and benefit from an increase in targeted customer leads.

There were a few other reasons we chose to give ServiceMagic our winning recommendation.

* More than two million people go to the site every month, resulting in over 150,000 customer service requests.

* It covers more than 500 home improvement tasks. So customers keep coming back to ServiceMagic for needs that range from finding a maid, remodeling their kitchen, fixing leaky faucets, installing air conditioners, and much more.

* More than 40,000 residential contractors use the service.

* It has been operating since 1999 and recently launched in Canada. (Not a fly-by-night company.)

* It is a pay-per-lead model, so you only pay for the leads you receive.

* The company requires customers to complete a three-page interview detailing project specifics and providing their complete contact information--so the leads are targeted.

* It creates a Web page for you and takes care of the search engine optimization and your pay-per-click campaigns so you appear in the top results. Remember, you only pay for the lead--not the click.

* One of the reasons we think it tops the list is the fact that its member businesses can collect past customer ratings and reviews. What other marketing service provides this instant third-party credibility as soon as a customer is presented with your information?

The Internet is not going away, but if you do not start marketing your business online, you might not be around. If you have the time to dedicate to creating a targeted and cost-effective online marketing campaign, go for it.

A word of advice though: if you think managing a direct mail campaign is hard, it is a piece of cake compared to creating an online marketing program. Make it easy for yourself: find someone who has the knowledge and expertise to do it for you, so you can do what you do best--your job!

RELATED ARTICLE: Measuring marketing determines real return.

Unfortunately, many businesses invest in anything that seems to make sense, without regard for the results. It never ceases to amaze us how many contractors never track their marketing efforts to see what is working and what isn't. Money is spent, and it is assumed that it has worked or not by uncalculated guess work, and no facts or figures to back up the return. This is simply wasted money.

The cost of Yellow Page advertising depends on the size and placement of the ad, and if you are advertising in multiple books. But few people track where their lead came from and fewer determine the cost to acquire the lead generated from their advertisements. These are two essential facts that are necessary in order to determine what is generating your best leads.

I worked with a contractor who "assumed" his Yellow Page ads were the best bang for his marketing dollars. I asked him to track where his leads were coming from and after a year, he found that it was actually costing him more for the ad than the ad was producing in sales.

The typical response for most marketing vehicles is low--usually in the low single digits--for an outstanding promotional piece, when the average piece will more than likely pull 0.5%. That means that an astute business owner will be selective in choosing the right marketing vehicle, so his cost to acquire the customer will be effectively low, not outrageously high.

To put this in real numbers, if an RSI contractor decides to use a direct mailing piece to a list of 18,000 potential customers, the cost could be anywhere from $0.60 to $1 per piece. That means, he would be spending somewhere around $10,800 to $18,000 for the promotion alone for a one-time use. Of course, this further reduces the lead generating capabilities of the program, since multiple or repeat promotions to the same list is needed to increase response rates).

With a one-time use of the promotional piece, we could likely expect a response rate of one or two leads; or a cost to acquire the lead of up to $9,000 to $18,000 per lead! If the contractor's average job is anything less than that $18,000, that contractor is in a losing situation.

The idea here is to generate "targeted" leads at the cheapest cost to your company. If you could generate these leads for a sum of $20, $10, $1 or $0.50 cents each, the return-on-investment is to your advantage.

Henry Goudreau, C.S.L. has more than 30 years of experience working in construction and is CEO of HG & Associates Inc., a business coaching company for contractors. His Golden Hard Hat business coaching program is enabling contractors to average a 22% net profit margin with an average increase of $96,000 in net profit during the first year. He writes for more than 20 trade publications and speaks to thousands of contractors every year. For more information, visit http://www.hgassociates.com.

Looking beyond the Big Pit.(Features)

Byline: By Pauline Brettell Western Mail

You are more likely to see a sign pointing you in the direction of The Big Pit, than one showing you the way to Blaenavon. The village of Blaenavon, World Heritage site and Book Town, lies alongside The Big Pit.

It is easily bypassed en route to other more bustling destinations, but is worth the detour. And, if you are thinking about getting into the property market, it is definitely worth a little more than a detour, as you will find a village that is in the process of shaking off its dusty mining town image.

It's a village that's on the turn, and if you are looking for a good investment, that's a good thing. The process of regeneration is well under way, but also far from over which makes property still relatively affordable, certainly when compared to neighbouring towns like Abergavenny, only 10 minutes down the hill. It also offers an 'escape to the country' while being in striking distance of several major centres.

Having been declared a World Heritage Site in 2000 has meant several things for the village. Obviously a lot of energy and money has been put into the refurbishment of the historical points of interest like the Big Pit and the Ironworks, but this has also started to spill over into the town itself on a number of different levels. The marketing effort that has been put into it as a whole has impacted on the village as a destination in its own right, especially as Booktowns International has also founded it as a Book Town. Both have been significant catalysts for the process of regeneration that has already taken place and is still ongoing.

The impact of this process is starting to be visible in the streets of Blaenavon, and there is still a lot more energy, and, more importantly, money to come.

Looking at all that is going on in the village, along with the fact that there is still room for improvement, is what makes Blaenavon a village with potential. It is a potential that appeals to a range of people in the property market, but first time buyers in particular, as you can still get something worth living in for comfortably under a pounds 100,000. Not only that, but despite feeling like you are in the heart of the country when you are there surrounded by the hills and the heather, you are in a very commutable location whether from Cardiff, Newport, Pontypool or even closer, Abergavenny.

The type of property available ranges from major renovation projects, to ready to go, fully restored homes. Don't let the understated exteriors of the terraces fool you, a lot is being done behind those closed doors in Blaenavon.

Drive around, get some names of estate agents and have a look at their websites, and you might be surprised at what you will find.

Before you even get into the village, it soon becomes apparent what the countryside has to offer. The unspoilt and even wild appeal of the hillside is a good place for walking and hiking, while affording some wonderful views over the surrounding valleys. A quick drive on and up Broad Street, the commercial centre of the village, reveals nothing more, at first glance, than a considerable amount of scaffolding and a few sleepy shops. But take the time to park your car and meander around, pop into the shops, and chat to some of the owners, and you will soon get a better feeling for the energy and enthusiasm that is being put into the regeneration of this village.

As a Book Town, Blaenavon has now got about 10 bookshops, all with different areas of expertise and interest. There really is something on the shelves for everyone, from children's books to politics and poetry. Even one of the pubs, the Queen Victoria, has several shelves of books for sale, which puts a whole new light on book shopping!

And if books aren't your thing, there is a butcher and deli that most villages, not too mention a few trendy suburbanites, would kill for, straw boater and all. Coffee shops, Internet access, bookshops and butchers pretty much covers all that you need on your doorstep. Carry on down the road and you will pass a shop showcasing some delicate handmade Amber jewellery. Another few steps and you will stumble across the old shop faiade of Robinson's Chemist.

Step inside and you won't find a disprin in sight, instead it is crammed full of fabulous collectables and memorabilia that you will suddenly just have to have. While we where chatting, and admiring some Vintage dresses, shop owner and Blaenavon enthusiast Jane popped across the road. Five minutes later two frothy cappuccinos where delivered . . . now that's the kind of village life I can deal with!

OnAir chooses Aeroconseil to equip Singapore Airlines B777s with onboard GSM and Wi-Fi technology.

M2 PRESSWIRE-April 4, 2011-: OnAir chooses Aeroconseil to equip Singapore Airlines B777s with onboard GSM and Wi-Fi technology(C)1994-2011 M2 COMMUNICATIONS

RDATE:04042011

Hamburg, Aircraft Interiors Expo, -- OnAir and Aeroconseil will, in the coming months, begin fitting nineteen B777 aircraft from the Singapore Airlines fleet with onboard GSM and Wi-Fi technology. Aeroconseil will cover the engineering and certification aspects of thechanges alongside OnAir, which is providing equipment and the connectivity services to passengers' mobile devices.

OnAir and Aeroconseil are working together on this major project to implement the communication systems for the long-haul fleet of their customer, Singapore Airlines.

Connectivity on board as easy as on ground This project responds to the ambition of Singapore Airlines to offer its passengers a range of innovative services for maximum connectivity and therefore an extensive gateway to the outside world while travelling aboard its aircraft. To do this, the company will provide its customers with the latest tools for accessing wireless Internet (Wi-Fi) and mobile telephony services.

This technology provided by OnAir leverages Inmarsat SBB services.

"OnAir is delighted to work with Aeroconseil, which has an established reputation in the design and certification of inflight connectivity STCs. It is clear airline passengers increasingly expect to be able to use their mobile devices for calls, texting, emails and mobile data during flights. A seamless transition is growing between how we stay in touch in a taxi, on the train, at the airport and on the plane. As OnAir's customer base expands to help airlines meet those passenger demands, we will continue to partner with expert specialists such as Aeroconseil," says Ian Dawkins, Chief Executive Officer of OnAir.

The ability to share expertise in aircraft modification The new technology is being installed thanks to Aeroconseil's acknowledged expertise, particularly in the design and certification of such systems, an area in which Aeroconseil is a world leader.

Indeed, owing to its DOA (Design Organisation Approval) status, which means it can provide support up to certification of themodifications, Aeroconseil has quickly established itself as a reference partner for the leading providers of in-flight communications services, a sector in which OnAir is a key player.

"This contract acknowledges our ability to position ourselves at the forefront for new systems. Building on our proven skills in engineering and our expertise in certification, we are able to cater for even the most complex and innovative changes with strong implications for the aircraft environment," says Stphane Bollon, Sales Director in charge of the Air Transport activity at Aeroconseil.
