Vic: State govt to investigate if wages stolen from Aborigines

The Victorian government will investigate claims aborigines were systematically robbed
of welfare entitlements and wages owed to them for government work.

The Age reports the government has appointed an officer to examine more than 100 years
of state and federal government documents .. to determine if Victorian aborigines are
owed wages .. pensions .. child endowment payments .. and inheritances.

The officer reportedly began work in October in response to a Senate inquiry that found
Queensland and NSW aborigines' wages and entitlements were paid into state government
trust funds.

Historian Dr ROS KIDD says the money was withheld mainly between the 1890 and 1960s
when aborigines were forced to work on government stations and settlements.
