WA: Ocean robots to help scientists predict climate change
A mission to help scientists predict climate change more accurately is leaving the
Western Australian port of Fremantle today for the remote Southern Ocean.
It will release 17 robots which will dive to a depth of two kilometres every 10 days,
recording temperature and salinity measurements as they ascend.
The information will be relayed to scientists in Australia via the French ARGOS satellite,
providing a continuous measure of ocean change and current speeds.
Dr STEVE RINTOUL, the head of the mission from the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems
Cooperative Research Centre, says the data will indicate how ocean circulation is changing.
He says variations may indicate a change in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, which
influences climate patterns across the globe.
