Harris Corporation And FORE Systems Announce Broadband Wireless ATM Solutions.

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 9, 1999--

Harris Corporation, a world leader in microwave radio equipment and services, and FORE Systems, Inc., a leading global supplier for service providers building the new public network infrastructure, today unveiled plans to jointly sell and deliver high performance asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) solutions over point-to-point and point-to-multipoint microwave radio networks.

The Harris-FORE Systems partnership stems from a two-year wireless-ATM joint sales and marketing agreement, where the two companies collaborate on sales, trade shows, seminars and conferences, and marketing communications initiatives. As part of a separate reseller agreement, Harris integrates FORE products into Harris radio equipment for sale to affiliates and customers directly and indirectly through certified dealers, distributors, or third parties.

"The ATM and wireless technologies provided by FORE and Harris respectively give customers the three benefits they seek most," said Richard Peabody, general manager, Harris Corporation, Microwave Communications Division."Those include greater bandwidth efficiency through ATM, flexibility to interconnect sites regardless of location, and cost savings."

FORE's ForeRunner(R) ASX(tm)-200BX ATM switches will be used in combination with Harris' MegaStar 155(R) radio equipment to create a 155 Mbps microwave network backbone for transferring voice, data and video. Future applications will include wireless transfer of broadband multimedia information between enterprises using point-to-point and point-to-multipoint links. At SuperComm '99, Harris and FORE are providing a live demo of the simultaneous transfer of HDTV video, CD audio, high-speed Internet files, and telephony over a single wireless link between the Harris and FORE booths.

"The combination of ATM and wireless technology gives companies the capability to meet their needs for real-time mission-critical applications that can be deployed in a highly flexible, cost-effective manner," said Donal Byrne, senior vice president, corporate marketing, at FORE Systems. "These technologies will help companies to maintain the highest customer service and system availability."

The ATM and wireless technology combination provides additional benefits including scalability of existing systems, ample capacity for incorporating future upgrades, robust, network-protected interfaces, and speed of implementation.
