Kerr-McGee waste dump rouses suburb activism

Three months ago, Nancy Assian worried most when her childrenwere feeling sick or struggling in school or fighting with friends.

Now the West Chicago mother worries, only half in jest, thatthey might glow in the dark.

Assian used to read The Cat in the Hat. Now she readsgovernment reports about the dangers of radioactivity. She used towrite notes to teachers. Now she writes letters to congressmen.
