A Kidderminster man received a letter purporting to be from aSingapore bank asking for his co-operation regarding a "dormantaccount".

And a Hagley man received a letter from a bogus Singaporeinvestment company regarding the death of a person who had the samename as him.

Both letters had no addresses but London postmarks and in eachcase the firm asked the recipients to make contact via phone or e-mail.

Both men contacted police, who informed the Office of FairTrading.

A West Mercia Police spokesman said: "The letters do appear to bescams.

"Luckily both men were suspicious and contacted us. The intentionof the letters is to obtain personal information.

"Those who respond may well find they are asked to provide bankaccount details and that subsequently funds are withdrawn withoutpermission from their accounts.

"It is also possible that the phone numbers given for recipientsto ring will cost them a lot of money."

The officer added: "There are numerous scams, some which are veryconvincing.

"Anyone who receives an e-mail or letter saying they have wonprizes or been left money is urged to delete it or bin it. Ifsomething sounds too good to be true, it usually is."
